A new season begins, so to speak. As I was reading the book “Grit : The Power of Passion and Perseverance”, authored by Dr. Angela Duckworth who is a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, new insights and sparks moments came into my thought, so profound the impact that I must say this is a new beginning of season in my life.

I am a self-motivated person; I have the quest for on-going learning and self-improvement. I would like to share with you what I have learned from the book.

Effort Counts Twice

It is true that no matter how talented a person is, without unrelenting effort, his or her talent is nothing more than the unmet potential. According to Dr. Duckworth, “Talent is how quickly your skills improve when you invest effort; Achievement is what happens when you take your acquired skills and use them”, in short :

Talent  x  Effort  = Skill

Skill    x  Effort  = Achievement

My take is : With effort, everyone can achieve something !

From the sharing of countless interviews conducted by Dr. Duckworth, I realized the element of “perseverance” in taking the effort, and thus produces…grit.

Here’s the good news, grit grows. Dr. Duckworth suggests the 4 psychological assets :

  1. Develop a Passion

nobody is interested in everything, and everyone is interested in something

2.  Deliberate Practice

full concentration and effort on a defined goal, open to continuous improvement

3. Hope

spirit of resilient, optimistic, growth mindset

4. Purpose

seeing the greater sense of purpose

In Chinese translation, interestingly, “Grit” also means “砂砾”, small loose particles of stone or sand.

It is the grit that makes us stronger, rise up to occasions, move forward in face of adversity. May all of us one day become the paragon of grit and achieve a greater purpose in life.
